Baptism is a special and joyful occasion, marking the beginning of a journey of faith and a welcome into the family of the Church.
At Christ Church, we are delighted to share this important moment with you, whether you are bringing a child for baptism or considering baptism for yourself.
Baptism is a sign of God’s love for each person. It is a time to give thanks, to celebrate new life, and to ask for God’s blessing for the future.
A baptism service is a meaningful and personal occasion, shared with family, friends, and the church community.
During the service, we:
Give thanks for the person being baptised
Pray for God’s guidance and blessing
Make promises of support and encouragement
Welcome them into the life of the Church
We will help you understand what happens in the service and support you in preparing for the day.
Baptism is open to people of all ages.
For children, parents and godparents make promises to support them as they grow in faith.
For adults, baptism is a personal step of faith and commitment.
If you are unsure about baptism or would like to know more, we are always happy to talk with you.
We will guide you through each step, including:
Choosing a suitable date
Explaining the service
Helping you prepare for the promises that are made
Answering any questions you may have
Godparents play a very important role in a child’s baptism. They promise to support the child in their Christian faith and to help them learn about God and the Church as they grow.
We ask that godparents:
Are willing to make promises during the baptism service
Are confirmed members of a Christian church (or open to exploring faith)
Are able to support the child spiritually as they grow
Ideally are at least 16 years old
You are welcome to choose more than one godparent, and we are happy to advise you if you are unsure about who to ask.
If you have any questions about godparents or what is expected of them, please speak to us — we are here to help. Get in touch.
You do not need to be a regular churchgoer to enquire about baptism. Everyone is welcome at Christ Church.
